Maipú Premium Route: iconic wineries, heritage and fine wines

The Maipú Premium Route brings together La Rural, Trapiche and Alandes on a flexible, self-guided cycling itinerary showcasing some of Mendoza’s most distinctive wineries.

The Maipú Premium Route combines wine heritage, historic architecture, premium wines and optional dining experiences. Its core selection features La Rural, Trapiche and Alandes, three wineries with contrasting personalities that you can discover by bicycle at your own pace.

This is not a guided tour or a fixed itinerary. Maipu Bikes provides a bicycle, helmet, map, route briefing and recommendations so you can plan your own day. Depending on your reservations and available time, you can visit two or three wineries.

The idea: primero confirmá las experiencias con las bodegas y después armá el orden de las visitas. La ruta se adapta al día, no al revés.

Founded in 1885 by Felipe Rutini, La Rural is one of Maipú’s landmark historic wineries. Its Wine Museum introduces visitors to Mendoza’s winemaking past through preserved equipment, facilities and objects connected with the industry.

In addition, its connection with Rutini wines offers another perspective on Argentina’s wine history. This is an especially appealing stop if you want to combine a tasting with local culture.

The winery received Wine Enthusiast’s New World Winery of the Year 2019 distinction. Consequently, it is a compelling choice for visitors interested in a celebrated Mendoza winery.

Alandes, associated with winemaker Karim Mussi, brings the most boutique character to this route. Its approach emphasizes distinctive wines and a close connection to the producer’s vision.

Because of its scale and personality, it offers a refreshing contrast to the historic wineries. As a result, visitors can discover a different expression of Mendoza’s wine culture.

05 / Planning your day

How to organize the Maipú Premium Route at a relaxed pace

To begin with, choose the winery experiences you would like to enjoy and check availability. A tour with tasting may take longer than expected. Therefore, squeezing too many reservations into one day can make the outing less enjoyable.

For example, you might visit Trapiche in the morning, continue to Alandes and finish at La Rural. However, this is only an illustration: it may not suit the actual booking slots, distances, tour durations or opening hours on your chosen date.

Short on time? Choose two wineries and spend longer at each. If you would also like lunch, leave enough flexibility for a relaxed meal and avoid overlapping reservations.

06 / Dining options

Where to eat along the Maipú Premium Route

Beyond wine tastings, the area also offers places to eat that may fit your itinerary. However, always check opening times, reservations and whether your chosen combination makes sense by bicycle.

07 / Cycling and safety

Bike lanes, traffic and irrigation channels on the Maipú Premium Route

The Maipú Premium Route is a self-guided outing through real streets, not a closed tourist circuit. Although bike lanes and quieter stretches exist, some sections also use roads shared with motor vehicles. Therefore, always ride attentively and follow local traffic rules.

Mendoza also has characteristic acequias: irrigation channels running alongside many streets. Some are open, so watch the road edges, junctions and entrances carefully. In addition, remember that Google Maps cannot replace awareness of road conditions.

Before you set off

  • Wear a helmet and follow local traffic rules.
  • Use bike lanes wherever available and suitable for your itinerary.
  • Watch for cars, intersections, driveways and open irrigation channels.
  • Do not check your phone while cycling; stop somewhere safe before looking at the map.
  • Allow extra time and remember that not all streets are reserved for bicycles.

Before departure, we explain the route and offer practical recommendations. We also suggest checking that your winery bookings allow enough time to return comfortably.
